America

Image
Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air? Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care? Someone told me that rock stars can sing anything. America for example does that exquisitely. Back when the rock revolution was just given birth in the pop culture, and new wave or heavy metal music was a mother's version of evil, America became popular with their light/folk take on rock music. America is best known for their songs, “A Horse With No Name” and “Sister Golden Hair". Not really a favorite of critics (remember The Beatles?), but they somehow crawled their way and still continually doing so with their exceptionally successful and commercially selling singles and albums. +/- This is coming from somebody who was born two decades after so you really don't have to believe me. You know how it goes, listen and decide. Just a reminder, vinyls and cds would be more convenient if ever you'll like them. S ister Golden Hair V entura Highway A H o...

The Hollies

Image
Every morning I would see her waiting at the stop Sometimes she'd shop and she would show me what she bought All the people stared as if we were both quite insane Someday my name and hers are going to be the same Ill try to be definitive in this post, I love The Hollies (As if there's an alternative adjective). A total rip-off of the ' The Beatles '? I think one must live a 100 years to be able to give a justifiable answer to that. If you didn't, really and who cares? +/- The Hollies is one of the bands I grew up listening to (and yes, The Beatles also) where a child can just receive and receive music without questions attached. Now growing older, I had no idea who this band really is but literally memorize by heart lyrics like "Bus stop, wet day, she's there I say/ Please share my umbrella/ Bus stop, bus go, she stays love grows/ Under my umbrella (Take that Rihanna!). One of the best and most commercially successful pop/rock acts of the British Invasion...

Lily Frost

Image
Lily Frost Folk songstress Lily Frost just released her album with interpretations of Billy Holiday songs (lesser-known). Her sound is regarded as " melodic, sweet voice and the arrangements of banjo, breathy tenor sax, low sweet clarinet and trumpets evoke the comfortable and stylish atmosphere of a jazz den. " source +/- A rare bird from Canada's musical woods, Lily Frost is inspired by spiritual exploration, human relationships, achieving the impossible, and long espressos. A serious musician who plays her own guitar and writes all her own songs, she's released 8 albums to date (including her work with seminal lounge group The Colorifics). Her work is cinematic, blending film noir, stark minimalism, cinematic images, and coruscating, soul-stabbing honesty. Skins is The Best Show Ever!

Image
Skins Ok maybe not the best, but its certainly on the top of my current list. Why? Gossip Girl encountered its fair share of criticism about its sex, drugs, and other vaguely inappropriate content when it premiered last Fall. But frankly, the Upper East Siders have nothing on the cast of Skins, the British show that premieres Sunday on BBC America. This show takes the limits of American TV and stomps all over them — and that's even without the edited-out language and nudity. +/- Skins, which just wrapped up its second season in the UK, is the rare show about teenagers that's actually written by people who remember well enough what it was like to be one: The show's writing staff has an average age of 22. The main character is Tony (played by Nicholas Hoult, aka the little kid from About a Boy — just try to get your mind around that one), the hottest and most popular guy in town; he, of course, has a gorgeous girlfriend, Michelle, to go along with his status. And th...

I almost forgot how good this band was.

Their musical structure incorporates a variety of musical styles including hip hop, alternative rock, punk, reggae, metal, and funk. Another Soul Obsession

Image
Thor Thor, premier R&B singer, performer & songwriter steps out into the spotlight with his new album "Soul Obsessions: Duets With Thor". A remix of songs heard on the WAVE 89.1 playlist, but this time sung with Thor’s favorite people. The album features the best singers in the recording industry today. +/- R&B dominates the over-all sound of the album of course, and Thor, a great soul singer in his own right (an Awit awardee no less) shuns the twist and turns of R&B singing in the album opener in favor of some good old fashioned singing – putting the song first and histrionics on the sideline as evidenced by the sublime vocal yearnings of Thor and MYMP’s Juris Fernandez on Be My Number Two, of course Chin Alcantara isn’t far behind on the guitar. The classy duet on the standard You Don’t Know Me with the fresh voiced bossa singer Sofia is also a sample championing substance over technique. Your Cup of Coffee

Anyone who'll listen to Jay-R's Soul in Me could be forever daydreaming. I haven't heard any smooth vocals lately in the local scene(OPM) until this album popped out. +/- Jay-R There's this seemingly magical quality in JayR's own kind of music and in his personality. People are instantly attracted to him as he walks inside a room. The attraction becomes even stronger as he starts to perform. The moment the person and the music assumes a single, harmonious creation, it's sheer enchantment! Truly, JayR's excitingly or enchantingly charming music is rather difficult to describe in mere words. Specially when the artist who delivers that distinctive sound to us is always able to whip up such strong impact. Just what exactly is this new R&B guy named Jay R? How can he weave such musical magic? Why do fans flock to his live shows? Endless questions but each one of them has an apt answer. 1. One Hundred Ways 2. Just To See Her 3. You Make Me Feel Brand New 4. L...

She and Him

Image
She and Him Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward—who first met in 2006 for a movie soundtrack project for the film the Go-Getter in which they recorded a version of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “When I Get To The Border”—have recorded an album under the moniker She & Him. Sensibly (or optimistically) titled Volume One. The album was released on March 18, 2008 on Merge Records According to Merge, at that initial studio session the two “were immediately struck by one another’s talents and found an instant rapport. During a conversation about their shared love of old records, Zooey let slip that she wrote her own songs, which she recorded alone at home on her computer. Somewhat shy about sharing these musical morsels, she was eventually persuaded to send them to M. He was instantly impressed, and they soon reconvened at his Portland studio to begin work. Recorded over a period of several months between acting work (She) and touring commitments (Him), the pair found time to bring Zooey’s fledgl...

Lost in the Wrong Decade

Image
The Puppini Sisters The Puppini Sisters are a trio of the Italian Marcella Puppini and English Stephanie O’Brien and Kate Mullins with “harmonies so tight you could bounce a baby off them”. The group was founded by Marcella after she was inspired by the film Belleville Rendezvous. The Puppini Sisters’ debut single, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, is a cover of the iconic hit single by The Andrews Sisters, and although the three are not actually related; they name themselves so in tribute to The Andrews Sisters. Marcella, Stephanie and Kate studied music at Trinity College of Music in London, where Marcella graduated in 2003. The Puppini sisters are currently supported by a 3 piece band featuring the talents of Martin Kolarides on Guitar, Henry Tyler on Drums/Percussion and Upright Bassist Nick Pini. Their second album The Rise & Fall of Ruby Woo was released on October 15th 2007. First he held me lightly and we started to dance Then he held tightly what a dreamy romance And he said "...

For Bossa Lovers

Image
Sofia Sofia is a 23-year old bossa singer in the Philippines. She graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Medical Technology. She is now a licensed medical technologist. Sofia became the featured artist in a bossa-inspired album project of Ivory Records by accident. After graduating, she was on her way to Japan to pursue her research scholarship grant to study Hematology when she was asked to help gather research materials for the project, since she was into bossa nova since she was in high school. Aside from helping out for the lyrics, CDs, and other research materials, she was also asked to submit a demo tape so that Ivory Records would know what bossa sounds like. Sofia submitted a demo tape of the song "Desafinado". The record company was impressed, and then she was tapped to be a session singer. Eventually she was chosen to be the featured artist for the album. A sliver of glass, A life, the sun, A knife, a death, The end of the run. And the riverba...

Nouvelle Vague

Image
Nouvelle Vague Nouvelle Vague (France) is a project created by French musicians Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux and a number of female singers. The group’s albums consist in brazilian fashioned covers of (primarily) new wave songs (hence the name “Nouvelle Vague”). The covers include songs by Dead Kennedys, The Smiths, Joy Division, Public Image Ltd., Depeche Mode and Bauhaus. Each singer only performed songs they were not previously familiar with, to ensure that each cover would have an individual interpretation. With a name that means “new wave” in English and “nova onda” in Portuguese (which is the meaning for “bossa nova”, a new music “fashion”), Nouvelle Vague’s moniker neatly sums up the group’s concept: remaking classic new wave singles with a Brazilian pop twist. Libaux played with various French pop bands during the ’90s and began working with Collin in 1998. For Nouvelle Vague, Collin and Libaux recruited half a dozen French and Brazilian vocalists who were unfamiliar...
